DIFS Service Update

Dear Daufuskie Island Residents, Property Owners, and Customers,

We regret to inform you that Beaufort County will not be extending our contract to provide transportation services past January 15, 2024.  We have been honored to serve you over the past seven years.  Together, we have endured Hurricanes, Tropical Storms, and Pandemics.  Our team has spent hundreds of hours advocating and educating our county officials on the importance of Daufuskie Island to the Lowcountry, and how improved marine transportation brings value to everyone.  All the while, our team members operated nearly flawlessly, providing you with the most comfortable, consistent, and reliable low-cost public ferry service the island has ever seen.  Our captains, mates, engineers, valets, and concierges have appreciated every opportunity to serve you.  From our family to yours – thank you!

The County’s Interim Administrator John Robinson informed us on December 15th that we must comply with the Court Order issued earlier this year prohibiting the use of Buckingham Landing after December 31, 2023.  As a result, the County has been working diligently to obtain a new location for commercial ferry services.  Mr. Robinson explained that the plan to move the ferry embarkation to the Cross Island Landing area on Helmsman Way ran into a roadblock, and as such, they were forced to seek an alternate location.  The County has determined that the new mainland site for embarkation and disembarkation will be at CC Haigh Jr. Landing on Pinckney Island.  CC Haigh Jr. Landing is undergoing intensive maintenance in order to reroute boat ramp user traffic and accommodate more than 175 parking spaces for the ferry operation.  The letter states that there will be handicap parking, resident parking, tourist/visitor parking, bathrooms, a storage building for the handling of luggage/carts, and a large tent with walls and heat in which people can wait for the ferry.  In addition, the letter states that there will be no charge for parking at CC Haigh Jr. Landing site, but that overnight vehicles must be properly identified.

As we wind down our operations for the county, please carefully take note of the following;

1. We intend to comply with the Court Order and vacate Buckingham Landing on December 31, 2023.

2. Starting January 1, 2024, ferry services will leave from CC Haigh Jr. Landing.

3. Our holiday schedule will be in effect on New Year’s Day – 7 AM, 8:30 AM, 4 PM, and 5:30 PM departures ONLY.

4. Anyone parked at Buckingham Landing should make arrangements to move their vehicle to CC Haigh Jr. Landing before January 1, 2024.

5. Daufuskie Island Ferry will provide a printout that you can place in your dashboard showing that you have overnight parking privileges at CC Haigh Jr. Landing.

6. Palmetto Breeze bus service will end on December 31, 2023.

7. On December 29th and 30th from 10 AM to 4 PM, we’ll utilize our Sprinter Van to provide complimentary shuttle service between CC Haigh Jr. Landing, Buckingham Landing, and Tanger Outlet/Daufuskie Island Visitors Center.

8. The Parking Lot lease with Tanger Outlets expires on December 31, 2023.  Anyone parking there overnight starting on January 1, 2024, will be subject to towing.

9. The Daufuskie Island Visitors Center store will close on January 15, 2024.  Please stop by the shop for our liquidation sale!

10. Daufuskie Island Ferry Service will cease operations on January 15, 2024, following our 5:30 PM departure from Daufuskie Island.

Thank you for all your support!
